Evolutionary arms race between bacteria and their viruses in soil @ 08:00 am

[info]earth_climate:
Viruses of soil bacteria (phages) evolve to improve their ability to infect the bacterial hosts that surround them. This is shown in a new study. Phages appear to be better able to infect bacteria from the same small soil sample than bacteria from just a few centimeters away. Evolution can therefore restructure ecosystems on a very small scale.

Lake Asymmetry on Titan Explained @ 02:21 am

[info]universetoday:

This mosaic of Cassini, SAR, ISS, and VIS images data shows that there are many more lakes in the northern regions of Titan than in the south. The eccentric orbit of Saturn is thought to have caused this imbalance. Image Credit: NASA/JPL/Caltech/University of Arizona/Cassini Imaging Team

If you've wanted to take a swim in a lake on Titan, don't: they're not lakes like we have here on Earth, composed of methane and ethane instead of water. If you have somehow evolved lungs to breathe and swim in these chemicals, you should take your beach vacation in the northern hemisphere of Titan, where you'll find many more lakes. Data taken by the Cassini mission has shown that there are more of these methane lakes concentrated in the northern hemisphere of Saturn's moon than in the southern hemisphere. A recent analysis of the Cassini findings by a team at Caltech has shown that the cause of this asymmetry of lakes is due to the orbit of Saturn.(...)

Slow-Motion Supernova @ 11:31 pm

[info]universetoday:
This artist’s impression of a supernova shows the layers of gas ejected prior to the final deathly explosion of a massive star. Credit: NASA/Swift/Skyworks Digital/Dana Berry

Supernovae are generally considered as fast and furious events. For the Type II, core collapse supernovae, the core implodes almost instantaneously although it takes some time for the shockwave to escape the star. As it does, the star brightens in what's known as the "rise time" of the supernova. For most Type II supernovae, this takes about a week.

So what are astronomers to make of supernova 2008iy that had an unprecedented rise time of at least 400 days?

Craticulina species fly

A Craticulina species fly found in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The species in this genus of true flies are parasites of the sand wasp. They do not lay eggs, but instead deposit their larvae on the food caught by the wasp for its own larvae, an act known as kleptoparasitism.

Activists stage a "die-in" in San Francisco

Today, in cities across the country and one week before the UN climate negotiations in Copenhagen, climate activists held demonstrations and workshops to bring urgent attention to issue of climate change. The events, known collectively as N30, coincided with the 10th anniversary of the World Trade Organization (WTO) protest in Seattle in 1999, where activists nearly shut down the city and changed the tenor of international trade talks forever. ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Editor's note: This post is by Jessy Tolkan, executive director for the Energy Action Coalition.

There have been times this year when “hope” was thrown around like a dirty word, spoken sarcastically as though the young people who wore it on T-shirts and showcased it on poster in their dorm rooms last year had somehow grown to despise it. Their fickle attention spans and casual attitudes were cited as signs that the generation did not in fact have the intestinal fortitude it would require to execute change, as opposed to just talking about it when it’s the cool t...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Amateur astronomers are a unique species worthy of their own reality TV show. Their craftsmanship, resourcefulness, dedication, and passion is simply amazing. Many professional astronomers rely heavily on amateurs for quick spot checks, discovery followups, collaboration on research projects, the diverse locations of their telescopes and their ability/willingness to put in long hours of observation. So what is spectroscopy, and what do the amateur astronomers get up to?

More Than 1 Million Spiders Used to Make 11-Foot Silk Tapestry @ 04:20 pm

[info]treehugger_feed:

Silk tapestries. You think of worms being farmed for the material, but not necessarily spiders. Yet spider silk is a super strong and beautiful material. One company based in Madagascar, however, shows that it's tough but possible to amass enough spider silk to make an incredible tapestry. Over 1 million spiders collected by over 70 people were hooked up to hand-powered machines where people drew the silk from the spiders. After four years of work on everyone's part, they created this golden piece of weaving. Click through to see a ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

And it's a statement to say that if everyone pitches in, we'll be able to transition to a sustainable world. Check out the video of the tree - and its cycling admirers - in action. ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Who Says Greens Are Ignoring the Chinese Drywall Problem? @ 03:50 pm

For once I agree with Trevor Butterworth of Stats, who asks "where is the outrage?" when it comes to the question of why people are not getting worked up about the issue of Chinese drywall emitting hydrogen sulfide gas. But then he quotes another "eco-logic" blogger who writes:

As to the usual fear entrepreneurial "green" groups such as NRDC, EWG, and US-PIRG, since there is no evil American corporation to blame this ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Debunking the Great Global Warming Conspiracy Conspiracy @ 03:48 pm

[info]treehugger_feed:
global warming conspiracy image

One of the strangest things about the ongoing non-controversy over the hacked climate emails is that it's revealed how irrational much of the thinking behind global warming denial really is. It's always been understood that people have fundamental reasons for resisting the idea that man's behavior is causing the climate to change--especially if they're deeply comfortable with said behavior. But I hadn't realized how many people actually--I mean really, truly--believe that climate change is a nefarious conspiracy concocted by elite l...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Help Us (and the AO3) Grow! @ 04:10 pm

[info]francescacoppa, posting in [info]otw_news:
Open Beta for the Archive of Our Own is entering its third week of booming growth, and we're all very excited by the positive, thoughtful, and constructive feedback we've been receiving from all of the new users. We've also been incredibly gratified by the groundswell of excited volunteers, eager to help us to make the Archive even better!

Happily, volunteer opportunities abound - particularly filling jobs in the infrastructure supporting the AO3. Organizing and communicating with our new volunteers is how our Volunteers & Recruiting Committee makes all our other work possible. Our Financial Committee makes sure the bills get paid, assuring a secure, stable home for all of that work. Both are vital to AO3 growth and sustainability.

If you're inspired by the AO3 project, and are moved to help us make it better, you may have just the sort of enthusiasm we can use! Volunteering in other capacities doesn't mean you can't also test code (banging on new features) or wrangle tags (helping to improve searchability) - many of us do both. Please take a look at the opportunities listed in our Willing to Serve post and help us to build stronger support for the AO3 by strengthening our organization. Send us a message to volunteer or to find out more!

As always, if you don't have the time or energy, but feel the impulse to be a part of what we're accomplishing, you can donate in support of our servers and our continued self-sufficiency - or just help spread the word to your friends and fannish communities!
